Jan is a Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist. He has more than three decades of experience caring for patients within clinical work and performing various interventional coronary and electrophysiological cardiac procedures.
Originally, Jan trained in South Africa as a Specialist Physician followed by subspecialty training in General and Interventional Cardiology. He has enjoyed solo private Cardiology practice which included setting up a cardiac interventional service for Clinical Holdings at N1 City Hospital in Cape Town.
To further upskill in electrophysiology, Jan spent 18 months at St George’s Hospital in London from 2005. He upskilled in cardiac electrophysiology and device implantation, including automated implantable cardioverter defibrillator and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT). Jan has performed more than 12,000 diagnostic and stent insertion procedures since 1991.
In 2009, Jan and his family immigrated to Australia. In collaboration with Ramsay Health, he established a diagnostic and interventional cardiac service at Albury Wodonga Private Hospital where the first cardiac stent procedure was done in 2013. More than 5,000 procedures have since been carried out and today the service is supported by 10 General and Interventional Cardiologists and Cardiothoracic Surgeons.
Jan enjoys all aspects of cardiology. However, the growth in the diagnostic role of cardiac CT in early diagnosis, as well as improved therapeutic intervention and clinical outcomes in the management of heart disease, are his new interests. He plans to support and co-develop the service with the visionary group of Cardiologists at Heart HQ. He looks forward to helping to continue to provide a comprehensive cardiology service to the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas.
Music and reading are his hobbies, although he is now exploring the possibility of learning to fly with the opportunities offered at the Sunshine Coast.
