Podcast episode 11: Left Atrial Appendage Closure

In this week’s episode, Peter and Stuart discuss Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure.

The LAA is a small thumb-sized pouch near the top of your heart. If you suffer from a condition called atrial fibrillation, blood can stagnate and form clots inside your LAA, which is a major cause of stroke.

If you have a history of atrial fibrillation, an LAA closure procedure may be an alternative to taking blood thinning medication long term. LAA closure is also indicated for patients who have atrial fibrillation and who are at high risk of stoke but cannot take oral anticoagulant therapy because of issues with bleeding.

Peter and Stuart discuss the procedure as well as recovery times and aftercare for patients undergoing an LAA closure.
